Arrington de Dionysio (Old Time Relijun, Malaikat dan Singa)
An uncompromising voice in contemporary music, Arrington de Dionyso integrates ancient soundmaking techniques with trans-modernist inquiries into the nature of consciousness. His propulsive improvisations utilize voice and reeds (primarily bass clarinets and his invention the Bromiophone) as multiphonic tools in the navigation of liminal spaces between shamanic seance and rock and roll ecstasy.
While deeply rooted in the punk inclination to tear down musical standards in an effort for liberation, Arrington's music weds its no-wave iconocl...

Wed. October 19th BOREAL SONS , Layten Kramer, Kirsten Ludwig
2000 tba at the door only.
Calgary band Boreal Sons, Evan Acheson, Regan Cole McLean, and Zach Schultz, never had the same guitar player for any two consecutive releases so when they finished touring overseas in 2014, they found themselves at a sonic crossroads. They were filled with doubt and uncertain about their future. This identity crisis drove Boreal Sons to forge ahead without a guitarist and experiment with their sound in their sophomore album You & Everyone.
Under the guidance of producer Jonathan Anderson (Aidan Knight, Jordan Klassen), You & Everyone is a textured and emotive affair filled with a bevy of keyboards, layers of synths, the gritty bass of McLean, and Shultz’s commanding percussion section. With Acheson’s sonorous voice an anchor throughout, the album is a mix of light (“Strangers”) and dark (“Midnight Mass”), introspective downtempo tracks (“All Catastrophe Di...

Thu. October 27th Billie Zizi, Songs From The Black Lodge, Scars and Scarves
2000 $8 at the door only.
A night of music that will move you..... $8.00
There's a certain amount of misdirection in the blues-jazz title track of Billie Zizi's debut album in that it doesn't quite prepare you for the wooziness to come. Sure, there's plenty of Gypsy violin(courtesy of Zizi's pops, Cam Neufeld) scattered throughout, snaking through Windog Blues, bringing an irresistible jauntiness to Dancing Shoes, but Zizi's heart is apparent when she slows everything down to mournful. Like the looping backwards guitar melting into the sparsest of intros on You Do Me No Good, with Zizi abandoning almost all lyrical drive by simply repeating in an oddly matter-of-fact voice “drag me down” over and over again on the chorus, or the long, slow build in Jukebox Baby, leading to chaotic squalls of Zizi's guitar. A fine first album, laying down ground work for what will n...
