Tue. May 24th Garden City Grooves presents Tanika Charles, Travel Light
Garden City Grooves presents Tanika Charles, one of Canada's most talented soul singers, in concert Tuesday May 24th at the Copper Owl. Tanika is touring in support of her full length debut, Soul Run, which will be officially released on May 10. She will be joined on stage by her band of stellar musicians for an incredible evening of soul music.
In five short years Tanika Charles has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and band leader, a staple of the Canadian festival scene. Both on stage and off, Edmonton-raised Charles presents an immutable charm, at times endearingly abrasive and honest in her vulnerabilities. Her art is inherently autobiographical. If Tanika’s singing it, she’s lived it.
With 2016 comes the release of Tanika Charles’ long-anticipated debut LP, Soul Run. The album’s first single and title track, a tale of withered romance ...

LSD AND THE SEARCH FOR GOD
LSD and the Search for God hit the Northern California coast in 2005––seemingly from another place and time––dosing audiences with hypnotic performances built upon swirling guitar sounds, otherworldly drones, fuzzed-out pop melodies, and dreamy vocal harmonies. As reviews of their first shows drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Yo La Tengo, Spacemen 3, and Sonic Youth, the band quickly developed a must-see reputation within San Francisco’s underground psychedelic music community.

Wed. June 8th TV on the Radio's Smoota, Old Cabin
2100 doors at 2000 $10 at the door only.
TV On The Radio's Dave Smith tours as SMOOTA. He describes his music as my sexual groovy solo act. I sing and play trombone and keys over backing tracks. There’s nothing quite like it but it’s in the tradition of Serge Gainsbourg, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, etc.
As a sideman Smoota plays keyboard, bass and trombone with TV ON THE RADIO. He's also performed and/or recorded with Run the Jewels, Sufjan Stevens, CeeLo Green, Spoon, EL-P, Miike Snow, Pretty Lights Music, Antibalas, Deer Tick, Phish, and many others.
Smoota is a one-man band - singing and playing keyboard and trombone over his sensual backing tracks.
He is releasing his second album in late 2016. His debut album FETISHES came out in October 2013 on Body To Body Records.

In the same way that Death Cab For Cutie, Kurt Cobain and The Head and The Heart spent youthfull winters in the dreary pines of the Northwest, Nanaimos MAVERICK CINEMA is a quartet of suburban grown Northwest youths both celebrating and trying to find their way out of homes vice.
Their debut EP Sanctuary, is out May 13th on iTunes, Spotify and through their website.
Mixed by Juno Award Winning producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, New Pornographers) and produced by Mike Edel, Sanctuary lands heavy with pounding drums yet emotional lyrics and melodic and vibey ambience. Jennifer Castle says that she “takes the world very seriously, while believing very much in impossible things.” This idea of being rooted in the real world – yet still free to soar in the ether of daydreams – offers insight into the contradictory and alluring world of Jennifer Castle.
One of Canada’s best kept secrets, Castle has managed to stay low-key and grounded in Toronto, Ontario, quietly crafting songs that capture the wonder of those impossible visions.
Her unmistakable voice can be heard on diverse list of recordings – including The Constantines, Kensington Heights, Fucked Up’s Year of the Pig and David Comes to Life, as well as albums by Ryan Driver, Eric Chenaux, Doug Paisley and Wooly Leaves just to name a fe...

Kathryn Calder returns to the Copper Owl this time she brings with her The Burning Hell.
Tickets are $12 at the door. No advance tickets at this time.
It’s easy to forget that Kathryn Calder is a music industry veteran. From her first band Immaculate Machines, to the New Pornographers and her solo works Kathryn has released 10 albums over the last 10 years, toured around the world, and solidified herself a career in music before she was thirty. She recorded her first solo album, Are You My Mother in her family home while she was taking care of her mother as she lost her fight with ALS. Shortly before the release of her sophomore record,Bright and Vivid her father suddenly passed away. This bittersweet whirlwind of success and tragedy is certainly reflected in her first two albums and presumably could have provided several more albums worth of material.
