Orkestar Kriminal, Bučan Bučan @ Copper Owl Jul 17 2019 - Jul 16th @ Copper Owl

Tickets: $12 in advance, $15 at the door*
Orkestar Kriminal
Orkestar Kriminal is comprised of 5 male and 5 female improv performers who interpret inspired renditions of slum-based "world music". They sing gutsy and adventurous criminal songs from a dangerous and forgotten era, like Mexican tequila-smuggling tunes, Russian prisoner laments, and the grooves of a Yiddish gangster. They can also be found performing in Pashto, Greek, Hebrew, or whatever other tongue might attract the multilingual stylings of front woman Giselle Claudia Webber. So long as the tune is catchy and a little shady, they'll give it their best shot. Orkestar Kriminal's debut album "Tummel" was released in 2015, attracting a plethora of media attention, and winning a GAMIQ for "Roots Album of the Year". After continuous touring and a multitude of festival performances, the biggest criminal punks in world music have just unleashed their 2nd full-length: Ryobra , with Producer Josh Dolgin, released August 24th, 2018 on Coax Records. In December, 2018 Ryobra hit the #1 spot on the Earshot “National International” college radio charts.

Bučan Bučan
Made up of a very colourful and talented collection of musicians playing trumpets, violins, clarinets, tubas, accordions, trombones and drums, Bučan Bučan has been entertaining crowds for the last five years with its variety of traditional, eastern European brass band tunes and original material inspired by Balkan rhythms and melodies.

This high energy group is mobile and often plays while moving around a venue, indoors or outside, making use of the different features of performance spaces while giving their audiences an up close and personal experience with live music. Alternately, the band is just as comfortable on a nightclub stage playing to a packed dance floor.

Mauno - [alternative pop]
'Really Well', the new record from Halifax band Mauno, is an expansive, idiosyncratic study in the creases in intimacy, authenticity, and labor, and the ways that music—guitars, bass, drums, synths, and vocals—can explore and express them. Written by Niemi, vocalist/guitarist Nick Everett, guitarist Scott Boudreau and drummer Adam White and recorded at Chad VanGaalen’s Calgary studio, the record collapses the personal and the professional within critiques of capitalism and creative labour. Musically, too, it is non-linear, jutting from the twisted, plucky indie-skiffle of the opener to the charged post-punk march of “Half It,” to the spring-reverb-tweaked riffing of “Reeling II,” to the dreamy, sidestepping guitar pop of “Expectations,” to the gorgeous, macabre slow-jam of “Vampire.”
Lyrically, the record deals with Mauno’s preoccupations with the nature of creative labor, relationships, and the self under capitalism. They note that their critiques are filtered through a lens of the absurd, turning them playful. “There’s something about humour and laughter that is very subversive and deeper than I think a lot of people realize,” Niemi says. “With these songs, I was trying to sort of dance on the line.” “There’s a double meaning to everything,” adds Everett. “You have to leave space for people to think. Where is the place for the listener if they’re not going to contribute their own thoughts, or their own interpretations?”

This Regular Occasion event takes place on Coast Salish territory, in particular the territory of the lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. Please hold this in mind and embody a respect for this land, its people, and their history as we celebrate.

It will be lovely to see you.

Chance Lovett & the Family Band:

Chance Lovett has one hell of a voice, which she uses to spin soulful tales of loneliness and longing. Her old band, The Chantrelles, were Victoria's premiere soul-revival party band for a minute there; now she's returned with the Family Band, featuring a few former Chantrelles and some new faces. Their all-new batch of songs blend together sweet Northern soul, dirty southern funk, and a dash of modern indie sounds. Influences include Otis Redding, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Etta James, Bill Withers, Beyonce.

If you haven's seen Quarterback live yet, get ready to have your mind blown. Sexy, soulful and enchanting, Quarterback's r&b and pop vibes will have you on the dancefloor begging for more of this next level act.

Fri. August 2nd  Bored Decor, The OKGB, Speak Easy

Bored Decor, The OKGB, Speak Easy @ Copper Owl Aug 2 2019 - Jul 16th @ Copper Owl
$10 adv $12 door
Bored Décor {Vancouver}
"Bored Décor make the kind of sneering, unpredictable post-punk that created its early fascinations in the U.K. and New York City. Not that they’re a throwback act, quite the opposite - they’re a primal bunch of weirdos laying out punk-adjacent sounds derived directly from the unconscious. If you tried to describe Talking Heads to an alien from planet jazz, the sounds Bored Décor make would be what they’d imagine." - Sled Island

OKGB {Victoria}
"OKGB play wonderfully lo-fi post-punk that comes across as a punkier version of Devo." - Ride the Tempo

Speak Easy {Victoria via Kelowna}
Speak Easy combines moody psychedelic rock with an eclectic pop sound. After a move cross-province from the Okanagan, Speak Easy is currently residing on Songhees (Lkwungen) Territory (Victoria, Vancouver Island).

Artist bio:
A nostalgic voice amidst minimalist grooves; The Sophistocrats create a thoughtful, expansive tone. Together, their debut EP, was released on March 24th, 2018. With distilled melodic hooks and open-book lyricism, they depict a poignant narration to today’s definition of romantic love, self-love and trust (The Permanent Rain Press).

Since their inception in 2016, The Sophistocrats have built a dedicated local following that has enabled them to play the Sunshine Festival (Vernon, BC), MarketFest (Nelson, BC), the Sam Steele Days (Cranbrook, BC) and the Fisher Peak Winter Ale Series (Cranbrook, BC).

They’ve opened for touring indie bands like Dirty Mountain, Friends Of Foes, Living Hour, the Gabriel Palatchi Trio, FKB, Giant Water Bug, Steph MacPherson, Charlie Jacobson and The Racket. Their music has gotten radio play in Canada and the United States, and their song Nothing Left was a semi-finalist in the Music City Songstar Challenge.

The Sophistocrats create music inspired by shared experiences. “There is so much incredible music out there, but when I get to know the artist personally, it makes their music resonate with me on a deeper level” (Sophie, Canadian Beat Interview).

CHASE SPENCER W/ KING BULL, Shed Monkeys, Supreme Remedy @ Copper Owl Aug 10 2019 - Jul 16th @ Copper Owl
$10 at the door only.

KING BULL (On tour from AB)
King Bull is the collection of three friends with the likeminded goal, to play rock and roll. The members have been intertwined since their early youth playing in various groups with each other throughout middle and highschool. In just three short years King Bull has recorded a demo, have had airplay on local radio, sold out multiple headlining shows and supported acts such as Sebastian Bach, The Beaches, Monster Truck, One Bad Son, The Lazys, and The Standstills. After recently working with Juno nominated producers and engineers at Velveteen Audio located in Edmonton Alberta, they have recorded and released their debut single Sha Na Na along with a b side titled Mouthbreathers.

He recorded with producer Lance Lapointe (VIMA Musician of the Year) and Malcolm Owen Flood (Band of Rascals) at Woodshop Recording Studios on Vancouver Island throughout early 2018. From these recordings, he has released two singles: "Whiskey" and "Lost in The Dark,” with a new EP on the way.

The influences of 90’s alternative rock and acoustic folk, along with his crisp vocals creates a warm sense of nostalgia; his song writing technique produces an innovative and distinctive sound that is becoming his own signature style. With a full band behind him, his energetic stage presence makes you want to get up, sing along, and stomp your feet.

Rock & roll from outer space, take a ride and melt your face.

Victoria’s finest rock & roll.

Lucas Chaisson's latest full-length release is a culmination of five years of life writing and playing music in Edmonton, Alberta. A brilliant follow up to the acclaimed, Colin Linden produced, "Telling Time" (2015), the aptly named "Most True Thing" dives deeper into Chaisson's journey to discover his true voice.

For the first time, Lucas takes on the role of producer - resulting in his most fully realized effort to date. Engineer Scott Franchuk and a lineup of some of Canada's finest musicians take the listener on a journey from soft, understated folk ballads to twang heavy electric guitar anthems. The band accompanies Chaisson in a way that serves his "freshly-familiar" style of songwriting.

At its core "Most True Thing" is a look inside the mind of an artist striving to find himself. Fans who have followed Chaisson since he broke onto the roots scene as a 16 year old kid will appreciate the growth and maturity displayed in his new release. New fans will appreciate the comfortable, seasoned atmosphere of the recording - a product of growing up in front of an audience. "Most True Thing" solidifies Lucas as a sincere artist who is in it for the long haul.

“The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills, he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” The Calgary Herald, CANADA

“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in their thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stopper.” The Firefly Column, USA

“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” The Indie Blender, CANADA

“reinventing roots guitar” - Rhythms Magazine, AUSTRALIA

“Watching Daniel Champagne perform is a once in a lifetime experience. He is a true prodigy that plays like no one else could possibly play unless they spent at least two lifetimes studying the art.” BW Review, NEW ZEALAND

‘Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band, Champagne is just magical’, AUSTRALIA
