We, as a group, would like to acknowledge with respect the Lkwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory Victoria/Copper Owl stands and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. As artists operating on this stolen land it is important to recognise and work against colonialism and systemic racism in any form.

We think this goes without saying, but this event is a QUEER/FEMINIST/TRANS space which is HET/CIS **FRIENDLY**. Take your transphobic/misogynist/free-speacher/racist/otherwise bigoted beliefs elsewhere and shove it!

The venue has a large set of stairs on entry, limiting accessibility. That being said, we have 20+ seats arranged which can be reserved ahead of time, although only for people who need seating.

NESS-T

DJ Ness-T favors deep bass lines and rocking girl vocals. From smooth deep house to trap bangers and everything in between. Always leaning towards to darker, bad ass, lip-biting-sexiness of electronica.
Music has always been the driving force behind her creativity, her best friend on rough days, and ever present soundtrack to life. Ness-T believes all genres have their place and time, and there is no need to limit yourself to only one. Ness-T strives to incorporate the best of each category with each individual situation, while creatively blending it all together with a sprinkling of high energy live drumming on top.

DJ Marlee

Marlee first stepped to the decks at age 19 and enjoyed a meteoric rise within Canada’s West Coast scene; particularly hometown Victoria, BC where she was known for creating romping dance floors through dirty rhythms and big bass. She packed clubs, stood beside legends and carved herself a following, but 20 years later, Marlee is rediscovering her first love.

FAQ:

> Why the Name "Ladies Night?"

The intention behind this event is to bring our community together to support female DJs in the Bass Hive brand. Doesn't mean it's only women-identified only able to come into the space. This is definitely a collective, community, we appreciate our male-identified friends who post for us, support the female djs.

It's a ladies night because we are promoting empowered female-identified DJs. Empowered ladies being featured, plus a nod to a song called "Ladies Night" from back in the day.

Please be respectful of the space you are in. Everyone is welcome. We are in the space together. Be respectful of who is and who isn't a "lady". We all have perceptions of ourselves. This is a safe-space, queer-friendly. Let's be there for the Bass. Bassey-Housey night of music.

Only 120 people capacity at The Copper Owl. Let's get out there and have a good time!

______________________
Born and raised in Lethbridge, AB, Ty Vanden Dool has been recording and performing his personal style of synthpop since his studies in the University of Lethbridge's Digital Audio Arts program, blending elements of past new wave favourites like Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears with those of recent electronic bands like CHVRCHES and M83. Besides an appearance at Reign Bough Fiddle near Smoky Lake, AB, Vanden Dool has played numerous local shows, sharing the stage with artists like Fox Who Slept the Day Away, Hello Moth, Kane Incognito, King of Foxes and Too Soon Monsoon.
After amassing a large collection of original recordings (one collection of which has made electronic chart appearances on community radio stations in Edmonton, Kamloops and the top 30 here in Victoria), Vanden Dool has collected some of his best work into a self-titled debut album. Rife with personal themes of loneliness, unrequited love and unfulfilled desires, it's sure to be one of the most upbeat downers of 2019.

Our lineup:

JoyLi
(Victoria/Bali)

Alex, and Jen are two souls that make up one funky whole. Playing parties in Victoria and abroad Alex and Jen lay down some beautiful basslines, soaring house and club staples. Make some room on the dancefloor because it's going to get cozy. ♥

More about Alex Joy:

https://soundcloud.com/dj-alex-joy

At the age of 14 Alex Joy traded in his violin for a set of turntables. By age 16 he was playing the biggest stadium parties in his hometown of Victoria B.C., booked on the bill with the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, Kevin Saunderson, and Yuan Atkins. After leaving his hometown he played internationally at Black Rock City U.S. (Robot Heart), Tokyo, Kyoto, Bali , Jakarta , Sydney ,Melbourne, Seoul ,Florianopolis Brazil , Hong Kong , Sao Paulo, and Berlin. The Heist, an experimental art film produced during his time at the Art Institute won several awards for music and cinematography. Subsequently he has been released on Renee Foster’s RF music label on the Entrowerk compilations part one and two with the tracks Love Addict and Bomp and Wakyo records with the single Pie. Alex was a regular at the Sound Wave Music Festival, held annually at Mussel Beach in B.C. Canada, where he played on the bill with Doc Martin, Dirt Crew, Thug Fucker and Matt Jonson to name but a few. His deep driving house sets have soul and a psychedelic edge. From festivals to after hours clubs, Alex is consistently being asked to play alongside some of the best in the game from Kenny Glasgow to Spirit Catcher, Rampue and Nick Warren to the Gorillas, with many in between. Currently based between Bali and Vancouver Island he is an avid explorer and defender of the Rainforests. He spends time deep in the rain forests of Southeast Asia capturing sound clips of the creatures and tiny gnomes that reside there. They give him the magic elements that infuse his music with exotic textures and led to the creation of the Rainforest Pavilion which starting at Wonderfruit Festival Thailand is growing into a movement harness the power of electronic music and festival culture to fund the protection of rainforests worldwide. With 18 years behind the decks, an everlasting adoration of music and a dynamic connection with the crowd that is in front of him, he continues to play with love, joy and an excitement that only expands through time.

More about Jen Li:

https://soundcloud.com/jen-li-636879132

Is a creature of higher order, this intergalactic super babe will stun you with her good looks as she woos you with her talent and mastery of frequency. She could be Singing , DJing or just making you look the best you have ever looked, one thing is for certain you will be impressed and walk away feeling better then you did. Her deep melodic house sets set dancefloors ablaze as her gaze ignites the room. As a classically trained musician her sound is dynamic and eclectic with the sensitivity of a female touch all while driving the dance floor with consistent musical wizardry.

Big Body
(Victoria)

https://soundcloud.com/thatbigbody

Big Body is a long time Victoria DJ spinning house, techno, electro, 140, 160, you name it. Evolving from the feistier days of electro bangers, Big Body's sound has matured into a more European take on techno and house. Constantly digging through new music, Ian's most excited to use VIBRATE as a venue to share his newest tunes and turn them up loud.

"Vancouver quartet Milk toe the line between dreamy jangle-pop and alt-country, created with uniquely blended accoutrements in the form of clarinet and violin arrangements. The result makes their debut, Mattress Ranch, a fun and breezy listen, turning many of genre conventions on their head and showing the promise of a band effortlessly proving they're more than just another "bedroom" band."

Black Marble formed in 2012 as an artistic extension of Chris Stewarts collection of songs and ideas. The name Black Marble took some time to arrive upon and is more than fitting. As a literal description of a material used to sculpt and build, its the fleeting notion of a one-time symbol of taste and affluence, frozen in a moment, slightly dusty and showing every smudge and mark. Started in a recording space in Bushwick, NY, Black Marble made their first EP, Weight Against the Door (Hardly Art) followed quickly by their chillingly moody and atmospheric debut full-length, A Different Arrangement(Hardly Art).

With both early releases the band followed a familiar path stomped down by synth wave pioneers whose hand assembled sounds and DIY ethics paved the way for likeminded artists. While taking inspiration from late 70’s and early 80’s projects like Silicon Teens, Iron Curtain, Lives of Angels, and Solid Space, Black Marble dialed in on a clear understanding of its own specific sound. After the release of A Different Arrangement in the fall of 2012 there was an almost immediate clamoring from fans for a new album but they were made to wait several years, for good reason. With the end of the East Coast chapter of Stewart’s life on the horizon, Its Immaterial was recorded in a period of mental and physical transition. Trapped between spaces and unable to move on until the snow globe flurry of ideas floating around him settled just right.

On September 30, 2016 Black Marble will release their second full-length, Its Immaterial, on Ghostly, and from a new locale, the West Coast. Still featuring Stewart at the helm along with select collaborators as supplementation, the bi-coastal shift lends a great deal to the overall feel of the new album. The light and dark elements of shadows. The salt and sting of evenings high tide sea spray. A beautiful thing left on a shelf too high to maintain. The general mood is that of creating something new, but going back in time to do it. Like attempting to flesh out a song that you woke up humming but cant find, because it doesnt exist yet.

Froth

INSTA: https://www.instagram.com/frothband/

Froth is a band formed in 2012 in Los Angeles, CA, by four friends who had never played in bands before. They released two albums in 2014 and 2015 before signing to Wichita Recordings in 2017 and releasing Outside (briefly).

Across the ten songs, the band dialed back the noise and psych-pop found on their previous LPs to reveal delicately beautiful melodies, intricately arranged instrumentals, and some of their most experimental song writing to date. This evolution revealed new dynamics of Froth’s sound, resulting in a moodier and more atmospheric bend to their shoegazing melodicism and pop sensibilities, mixing the driving, tuneful drone of first single “Contact” alongside the epic squall of the intertwining guitars on “Passing Thing” and the more spare, meditative landscape of “Show A Flower A Candle And It Grows.”

Following the release the band toured extensively in the US and Europe, including dates supporting RIDE and Interpol. The band is set to release their fourth studio album Duress on Wichita Recordings in spring 2019.
