Lakelse (pronounced lake-else) is an independent and alternative rock band based out of Victoria, BC. Formed in late 2014 by singer/guitarist Nash Park, bassist Sam Dunn, guitarist Graham Schibli, keyboardist Caitlyn Norman-Kovalick and percussionist Cam Harper. Hoping to incite self-reflection and a collective celebration Lakelse’s sound uses a combination of heavy, slow moving guitar riffs layered with grandiose synthesizer, and honest, soaring lyrics. Intending to blend dramatic intimacy with explosive dynamics Lakelse’s sound puts the listener in a place of both comfort and unease. These intentions are ever present in their first official release, The Prospect of the Dream EP.

Lakelse is currently focused on writing their first full length studio album. Using the lessons learned from writing and recording The Prospect of the Dream EP Lakelse’s newest venture is one they can’t wait to share.

Island Eyes is Victoria, BC's Derek Janzen. Formerly working under the name Wand, he recently felt the need
to change the name due to confusion involving another band with the same name. Derek has been quietly recording and releasing homemade alternative music from his home since 2008 and has been operating out of Victoria, BC for nearly five years. Over the years he's played with some great acts, including Mount Eerie, Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach, Cousins, and Chet.

You’re invited to Tropic Harbour, a utopian space constructed by Mark Berg for peace of mind. These bedroom pops are unabashedly dreamy. Mashed earworms and mint infused hooks blend with swooning guitar knits. The result: a levitating tincture!, a distillation of a pop pantheon that runs the course from Youth Lagoon and Wild Nothing all the way to Cocteau Twins and The Smiths.

Black Marble | Brooklyn, NY
BC: https://blackmarble.bandcamp.com/
TW: https://twitter.com/blackmarblenyc

Black Marble formed in 2012 as an artistic extension of Chris Stewarts collection of songs and ideas. The name Black Marble took some time to arrive upon and is more than fitting. As a literal description of a material used to sculpt and build, its the fleeting notion of a one-time symbol of taste and affluence, frozen in a moment, slightly dusty and showing every smudge and mark. Started in a recording space in Bushwick, NY, Black Marble made their first EP, Weight Against the Door (Hardly Art) followed quickly by their chillingly moody and atmospheric debut full-length, A Different Arrangement(Hardly Art).

With both early releases the band followed a familiar path stomped down by synth wave pioneers whose hand assembled sounds and DIY ethics paved the way for likeminded artists. While taking inspiration from late 70’s and early 80’s projects like Silicon Teens, Iron Curtain, Lives of Angels, and Solid Space, Black Marble dialed in on a clear understanding of its own specific sound. After the release of A Different Arrangement in the fall of 2012 there was an almost immediate clamoring from fans for a new album but they were made to wait several years, for good reason. With the end of the East Coast chapter of Stewart’s life on the horizon, Its Immaterial was recorded in a period of mental and physical transition. Trapped between spaces and unable to move on until the snow globe flurry of ideas floating around him settled just right.

On September 30, 2016 Black Marble will release their second full-length, Its Immaterial, on Ghostly, and from a new locale, the West Coast. Still featuring Stewart at the helm along with select collaborators as supplementation, the bi-coastal shift lends a great deal to the overall feel of the new album. The light and dark elements of shadows. The salt and sting of evenings high tide sea spray. A beautiful thing left on a shelf too high to maintain. The general mood is that of creating something new, but going back in time to do it. Like attempting to flesh out a song that you woke up humming but cant find, because it doesnt exist yet.

//
Froth | Los Angeles, CA
BC: https://froth.bandcamp.com/
INSTA: https://www.instagram.com/frothband/

Froth is a band formed in 2012 in Los Angeles, CA, by four friends who had never played in bands before. They released two albums in 2014 and 2015 before signing to Wichita Recordings in 2017 and releasing Outside (briefly).

Across the ten songs, the band dialed back the noise and psych-pop found on their previous LPs to reveal delicately beautiful melodies, intricately arranged instrumentals, and some of their most experimental song writing to date. This evolution revealed new dynamics of Froth’s sound, resulting in a moodier and more atmospheric bend to their shoegazing melodicism and pop sensibilities, mixing the driving, tuneful drone of first single “Contact” alongside the epic squall of the intertwining guitars on “Passing Thing” and the more spare, meditative landscape of “Show A Flower A Candle And It Grows.”

Following the release the band toured extensively in the US and Europe, including dates supporting RIDE and Interpol. The band is set to release their fourth studio album Duress on Wichita Recordings in spring 2019.

Whether it’s house, hip hop, speed garage, trap or UK inspired basslines, their production and live DJ sets are always characterized by a high-energy, multi-genre blend of deep, wobbly, rolling basslines and four to the floor, bouncy beats.

Built on a solid foundation of local support, Average Gypsy have earned a reputation always delivering a top-notch performance. Known for their captivating stage presence, quick mixes and ability to flow through a wide range of selections, which are always cutting edge, never predictable and always dance-worthy. They’ve played numerous shows and festivals within Canada, such as Astral Harvest Music Festival (AB) and Motion Notion Music Festival (BC), and are starting to gain the attention of a global audience, playing festivals such as Genius Loci (Baja, Mexico) and One Love Fest (California, US). Recently, Average Gypsy have played several shows in the Southern California region and have toured in the US, Spain and Mexico.

Average Gypsy hustles. Their tireless work ethic, dedication to continuous improvement and to honing their sound is reflected not only in their live performances, but also in their production. Thu. June 13th  Freak Heat Waves, Psychic Pollution, Dead Malls, Redress

Freak Heat Waves, Psychic Pollution, Dead Malls, Redress @ Copper Owl Jun 13 2019 - May 23rd @ Copper Owl
It's the return of the FREAKS!

Freak Heat Waves
BC: https://freakheatwaves.bandcamp.com/

While Freak Heat Waves’ core duo of Lind and Thomas DiNinno have primarily operated from the coastal community of Victoria, B.C., they originally formed in Medicine Hat, Alberta and have now made their most recent relocation to Montreal. Throughout extensive tours of North America, various line-ups of the group have included Cindy Lee/Women’s Patrick Flegel, Fountain’s Evan Jeffery, and Kyle Sherrill of Atlanta art-rockers Red Sea.

Freak Heat Waves’ 2012 debut was recorded with the late Chris Reimer (Women and The Dodos), while their celebrated sophomore LP Bonnie’s State of Mind saw a co-producer credit from Scott Munro (Preoccupations). On Beyond XXXL, Lind and DiNinno hunkered down to self-produce the album almost entirely independently. This process began in the studio facilities of Portland Community College, where electronic percussion expert Shawn Trail assisted with engineering the guitar, bass, and drum machines providing its foundation. Over the next nine months, the duo gave birth to their extraterrestrial baby, painstakingly shaping each sound in a pair of home studios.

Beyond XXXL matches the artifice of its alien pop with lyrics describing chameleonic performers sinking into their self-created costumes. Lind introduces this intention on opener “Self Vortex” as he intones “it ain't an escape / I want a way to transform tonight.” The slowly swirling “Bad Mutation” brings a more cynical view, as he describes “an ugly subculture” with “more banter for the audience” from someone “so realistic your sanity twisted.” Lind lets his guard down on the glittering romance of “Soothing Limbo”, but by “I Can’t Tell” it’s no longer possible to recognize a loved one who has begun to “simulate the taste and the smell.”

“Sell A Line” imagines early Roxy Music with Brian Eno’s sputtering synths pushed to the forefront and cultural critiques that could be set in any era: “Transformation of a western nation / Fake exorcism for the sake of religion / And televise the whole ordeal.” On “Subliminal Appeal”, the artist has become a politician: a “belligerent ex-showman / delivering programmed slogan.” Their tragic metamorphosis is completed on closer “In The Dip Of The Night,” as Lind reveals his revulsion to the “prima donna of subversive sound” spreading smoke and media hoaxes until the “spotlight shines and then spits you out.” Yet could it have been himself all along?

Before melting into thin air, Freak Heat Waves unleash the most striking musical moment on Beyond XXXL, which could point to their next transformation. The brain-battering blitzkrieg of “Toxic Talk Show” may sound completely drum machine driven, yet Lind explains that this self-described “grotesque freak-out rave” reached its apex with the band’s original mode of instrumentation.

“We wanted the album to have more intensity and insanity with an over the top dance number,” says Lind. “That one started with Thomas writing the synth line and the beat on the drum machine. We liked it but weren’t sure how to bring up the energy level, and funnily enough it became one of the only songs that uses a full drum kit. For the rest of the record we were trying to dial things back, but that’s the one song where we got free. We exorcised our demons right before the album ends.”

Psychic Pollution II Victoria II
BC: https://psychicpollution.bandcamp.com/

There’s a cold neu future brewing and its nostalgic gurgles can be heard in the records of the increasingly prolific Psychic Pollution. Psych heavy and Kraut in scope with sporadic kosmiche sampling that fits somewhere in the Berlin School of electronic music. Noisy at times, but heavy in ambiance and minimalism.

Orkestar Kriminal
Orkestar Kriminal is comprised of 5 male and 5 female improv performers who interpret inspired renditions of slum-based "world music". They sing gutsy and adventurous criminal songs from a dangerous and forgotten era, like Mexican tequila-smuggling tunes, Russian prisoner laments, and the grooves of a Yiddish gangster. They can also be found performing in Pashto, Greek, Hebrew, or whatever other tongue might attract the multilingual stylings of front woman Giselle Claudia Webber. So long as the tune is catchy and a little shady, they'll give it their best shot. Orkestar Kriminal's debut album "Tummel" was released in 2015, attracting a plethora of media attention, and winning a GAMIQ for "Roots Album of the Year". After continuous touring and a multitude of festival performances, the biggest criminal punks in world music have just unleashed their 2nd full-length: Ryobra , with Producer Josh Dolgin, released August 24th, 2018 on Coax Records. In December, 2018 Ryobra hit the #1 spot on the Earshot “National International” college radio charts.

Bučan Bučan
Made up of a very colourful and talented collection of musicians playing trumpets, violins, clarinets, tubas, accordions, trombones and drums, Bučan Bučan has been entertaining crowds for the last five years with its variety of traditional, eastern European brass band tunes and original material inspired by Balkan rhythms and melodies.

This high energy group is mobile and often plays while moving around a venue, indoors or outside, making use of the different features of performance spaces while giving their audiences an up close and personal experience with live music. Alternately, the band is just as comfortable on a nightclub stage playing to a packed dance floor.

Mauno - [alternative pop]
'Really Well', the new record from Halifax band Mauno, is an expansive, idiosyncratic study in the creases in intimacy, authenticity, and labor, and the ways that music—guitars, bass, drums, synths, and vocals—can explore and express them. Written by Niemi, vocalist/guitarist Nick Everett, guitarist Scott Boudreau and drummer Adam White and recorded at Chad VanGaalen’s Calgary studio, the record collapses the personal and the professional within critiques of capitalism and creative labour. Musically, too, it is non-linear, jutting from the twisted, plucky indie-skiffle of the opener to the charged post-punk march of “Half It,” to the spring-reverb-tweaked riffing of “Reeling II,” to the dreamy, sidestepping guitar pop of “Expectations,” to the gorgeous, macabre slow-jam of “Vampire.”
Lyrically, the record deals with Mauno’s preoccupations with the nature of creative labor, relationships, and the self under capitalism. They note that their critiques are filtered through a lens of the absurd, turning them playful. “There’s something about humour and laughter that is very subversive and deeper than I think a lot of people realize,” Niemi says. “With these songs, I was trying to sort of dance on the line.” “There’s a double meaning to everything,” adds Everett. “You have to leave space for people to think. Where is the place for the listener if they’re not going to contribute their own thoughts, or their own interpretations?”
